disclaimer: this post relatively glorifies Wesleyan University with rose tinted glasses. as i continue my journey at Wes, i am starting to recognize areas where the institution needs improvement. don’t judge…yet.
Transition to Wesleyan University
Having just ended my first year at university, I find myself gaining a stronger sense of navigating the academic landscape. I have become more familiar with the expectations, course structures, and study habits that lead to success in my interested fields of study. Although I do not know my intended major(s) for certain, I am optimistic that I will discover them with further exploration in various social scenes on campus and immersing myself in student organizations, clubs, and events that align with my growing interests and values.
That being said, I have discovered various communities that have provided me with a sense of belonging and connection. Some of these include WesSanga, Latin&Ballroom, FemFit, and Eclectic Society. In these spaces, I have not only cultivated meaningful friendships but also expanded my social networks. These communities have been instrumental in broadening my cultural capital, as I have had the opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Through these interactions, I have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for various cultures, traditions, and identities. All of these experiences have fostered my personal growth, empathy, and a greater sense of inclusiveness.
throughout this journey of self-discovery, i have gained insights into my cultural identity, mental well-being, and the interplay between academics and social life.
below is some advice that I have for you mi amor. (especialmente si eres latina y gay)
- College serves as a reality check, challenging your beliefs and perceptions.
- Imposter syndrome is a bitch. Familial pressures are straining. (Being away from home, I continuously questioned whether I am paying enough tribute to my family and wondered how I could uplift my community and acknowledge the sacrifices of my immigrant grandparents and first-generation mother.)
- Adapting to your new environment takes time. Show yourself grace. Being in these privileged spaces will challenge you in a multitude of ways.
- You will have juxtaposing feelings of uncertainty and doubt. It will be a struggle of finding beauty in uncomfortability.
- A sign of progress can be in the form of verbal language. People love you and let them be there for you. You are not a burden nor a disturbance. If someone makes you feel like you are, fuck them (pls not literally).
- Find people who recognize your worth and put in the same energy as you give them.
- In meeting new people and their experiences you will realize the significance of your own identities and its ever-evolving roles in shaping your college experience.
- Everyone experiences privilege differently. Recognize yours. Be aware of the power dynamics at play within the institution and among students.
- Your identity and the space you occupy is always changing. Let yourself marinate in that change.
- Life moves on with or without you. Sometimes you just have to put your big girl chones on and cry while you’re getting shit done. Know that you are doing everything you’re supposed to be doing. (entiendo que es dificil continuar. estoy orgullosa de ti por presentarte por ti misma.)
- You are not expected to know everything. You will gradually gain the ability to articulate and contribute in casual and academic conversations. (I held myself to high standards in class, constantly pressuring myself to grasp complex discussions and find the courage to participate actively. Later I realized that i am not the problem. The institution and social atmosphere is and that is to no fault of our own mamacita. That burden is not ours to carry. You are doing your part in trusting your future self to navigate these challenges.)
i swear im not payed by wesleyan to promote them but i might as well because shit they know what fine wine is.
